Last night was magical. I was feeling off between the ugly weather over the last week and the messiness of my roommates and the enormous amount of work, and feeling that i'm losing touch with G-d, etc etc...
anyway, by chance, i read the newspaper online and found out that there was going to be a meteor shower at 11 pm and another at 5 am. it was already 10, and i had a bunch of work. none of my roommates wanted to go out, so i decided to stay up til 5. whatev. it's the biggest shower this century or something, and i missed the last time it came around when i was in beijing.
it was worth it.
i walked down to the lincoln memorial and expected it to be crowded with people, especially couples (big open sky, relatively low light pollution, kinda romantic) but to my delight i was the only one there. i lay down on the side of the steps near the reflecting pool and looked at the sky. It was so clear, i actually picked out orion and the little dipper and the big dipper and there were lots of other stars left. one star in the big dipper seemed really bright. almost like a moon.
anyway, i kept my eyes on the sky from about 5:10 until 5:50, pondering and marvelling while tiny streaks passed through the air. it wasn't all the time. they were spaced apart just enough so that when i was too cold to stay out, another would come. some of them were just in the corner of my eye, so i thought they could be glints off my glasses or eyelashes, but they were meteors. as each tiny streak of white or red or yellow passed through the sky for it's second, I laughed. it really made me extremely happy to be there and then and that. the best was just as i was about to leave, i saw a meteor behind the lincoln memorial almost at the horizon.
it was such a beautiful experience! baruch hashem! i found out that the bright moon-star was really the Mir, moving slowly in its orbit.
is that good? maybe, but no time to ponder it right now. i will when i get back perhaps, but now i am goign to see Dan Bern! Woo hoo! The only man to puit Helmut Kohl into a song. You should all listen to a song of his or two - G-d Said No is good, Children of the Cold War, and Tiger Woods are good, too... and Jerusalem. anyway, bye!
