Chag Purim

So there are 4 things you should do on Purim. They are:
  1. Hear the Book of Ester (Megillah) in the evening and the morning
  2. Give at least 2 different types of food to at least one friend (some say to two friends) (mishlach manot)
  3. Give gifts to the poor (Matanot l'evyonim)
  4. Have a joyous meal (this is where the getting drunk comes in) (seuda)
Well, this year I managed to fulfill 2, 3, 4 (through my messenger in Israel), and half of 1. I didn't quite make it to hear megillah in the morning. Not bad in all, though. I didn't make it to services and also didn't really leave my house on Sunday, but there were so many people who visited that I didn't feel the need to leave.
It was great. Toby and I co-hosted a seuda that was Persian-themed in honor of Shushan. What does that mean? Mint, pistachio, apricot, plum, crispy rice, and lemon. And saffron, but that stuff costs, so we didn't use it. Anyway, no real Persians, but lots of wonderful folks ranging from Seattle David to [livejournal.com profile] moss_raven to Chana and [livejournal.com profile] rivka_m. We had pretty much just enough food (with a bunch of stew left over), and people were happy. Not enough chairs, though. I need a couch. I wish it had been at Toby's for that reason, and also because he REALLY wants to have people at his house for this kind of thing. He's now talking about a seuda shlishit sometime in the summer. That could be a great idea. At the end of the meal (3 or 4 or so), Toby and I laid down and went to sleep until about 8 (which makes it the second time that Toby has slept in my bed in a week - possibly a record for a guy!) All in all a great Purim. Man, it is SO my favorite holiday.

sounds wonderful, wish i could have been there. i had a whole mess with trying to retrieve my wallet from alan's that took too long, (its really hard to go places when you don't have a wallet and the metrocard you left out doesn't work, my friend rebecca z finally spotted me a few dollars, next time i temporarily renounce material possesions I need to be more organized about it) and as it was i barely made it back to CP in time to read megilla.

you mean the rice was *supposed* to be crispy? :)

There WAS alcohol available. And the burned part was intentional. The dryness not so much.

remember that phone call from my father with a message from my roommates? turns out the message got mangled in true telephone game style. it was supposed to be a heads up that some people I prefer to avoid were going to be at the chabad se'udah. Needless to say, I'm glad I'd already been to one (good) se'udah, and didn't mind skipping out on that one.
