Wow, it's been a while since China, but two things this weekend brought me back. First, as part of shabbas dinner Friday night, Kim made a Korean recipe for cucumbers in vinegar. The cukes were cut into seeded quarter-rounds instead of sticks, but besides that, they were just like my favorite side dish from Lao Ma Jia noodle house behind Beiwai. Sooo good. Thank you!
Then Saturday night at that house party, what was sitting on the bar? a bottle of Erguotou! This stuff sells for about a quarter a bottle and tastes incredibly nasty. First semester in BJ, we bought a few bottles of them and some soy sauce flavored cooking wine to get smashed off of. We couldn't drink the cooking wine, and this stuff was pretty rough, too. We decided it tasted like pickled smelly feet and from then on called it Foot Jiu (foot alcohol). We mixed this foot jiu with Coke which only made it worse. Then we added Sprite and a new tradition was born. It's decent with orange Fanta, too. The idea is, take a half-liter bottle of Sprite, drink a little, and pour in foot jiu to fill. it doesn't taste horrible, and it does the job real good. (according to an article i just read about it, it's 104 proof). Anyway, so i saw the bottle at the party and i was so happy. wish my phone had a digicam just for that. only problem was - no sprite. i had already had quite a bit of rum, though, so i thought it'd be okay with oj. not a good idea. there were only a few drops of tropicana left by the time i wanted to gan bei. it was so bad.... gah! but now i remember how bad it tasted. Thank you, Chloe and whoever brought the Erguotou. You rock.
