Dec. 12th, 2002 03:38 ami got no desire to do work. not unusual, but important, nonetheless. anyway, only a few days left of my last fall semester here. hmm. don't knwo how i feel about that. ambivalent. not going to go into it because any other senior must be feeling the same way and it's really nothing new. i need a change of scenery, though. foggy bottom is... well, it's foggy bottom. sterile, childless, white, corporate, rich, and snooty. it has its good points too, though.
being a guy, it's hard to meet women as friends. they always think you want sex. it's also hard for me to meet guys as friends because i get along much better with girls. that said, the majority of my friends are guys. hm.
it was nice to go to chinatown today. actually felt like i was back in china. this was aided by the fact that it was a dingy little restaurant. conditions were much better than in china, though. plastic chopsticks, fortune cookies, clean tables, heat, etc. the food wasnt fantastic (the mapo tofu was a bit loose and the sauce was thick) but it was pretty good. i got to use my chinese, eat from the center of the table, etc. it made me think of luoyang and pingyao, or actually, the shaolin temple when i went the first time with jason. cold weather, eating with one other person you've spent a lot of time with in the past few days (roommate), eating with choppsticks, looking at red signs that say gongxi facai and wanshi ruyi. ahhh china. twas good being back there today...(longing to return)

Date: 2002-12-12 02:01 pm (UTC)this was exactly how i felt in downtown L.A.'s Chinatown. it isn't the same thing, but it makes you miss china soo much...
even better was a Chinese neighborhood in LA where i had to catch a bus, and sat on the bench listening to the chatter in Mandarin, and watched the kids across the street at recess play their games and chant their jump-rope chants in the language i miss...then said goodbye to these two older ladies who were leaving on a different bus, and they looked back at the white girl speakin chinese and giggled! ai!
is there anywhere like that in DC, Chach?
and, by the bye, are we still on for 2008?
