Nov. 5th, 2003 01:49 amdid an experiment today.
i said 'hi' to people on the street. no one said hi back. one guy stopped, asked me if i knew him, and when i told him i didn't, he got flustered and confused that i should say hi. dc people suck.
oh, well there was that weird and disturbing 40-something woman on the way back home who asked me if she could "play with me..." maybe it's a sign not to say hi to people on the street any more. but i don't want to be a closed off prick like most people in this town.

Date: 2003-11-20 08:35 am (UTC)I used to smile at people in the street. Men used to act quite... er... well, I think it's just not the done thing. Now I smile and look at the ground. Possibly it seems even more flirtatious, but the people I smile at don't have time to communicate anything to me, if I don't make eye contact, but I still seem pleasant and mildly friendly. I hope ;)
Actually, this reminds me of a weird situation with my cousin. My family are from South Africa, and in the Jewish community there, if you see another Jew (ie walking to shul or something), you greet them. He gets very annoyed that in London (where he now lives) people don't do that. He thinks it's terribly rude. So I got your answer right here - move to SA ;)

Date: 2003-11-20 10:11 am (UTC)i dont know if the women or men were more aversive when saying hello or smiling. women think im flirting with them, and, especially in logan or dupont circle, so do the men. ah well. the 50+ year olds tend to smile back at least :)
