leftyjewI had one of the most Jewish and wonderful Shabbatot of my practicing life (2.5 yrs...kinda). Actually it's been a pretty good end of the week, but I'll start with Shabbat in case I have to go soon (I will).
After going to bed at 6 (couldnt fall asleep...) I woke up as Shabbas was beginning. I hurriedly showered, used electricity and shaved as the sun was setting (I'm a bad Jew) and then didn't feel like going to services. I wound up going, and even had a good time at services which is unusual, although the guy who led services was a bit annoying, it was enjoyable, and he's very spiritual, so that's cool. anyway, davened. at dinner there was a silly hanukah speil which kept me from eating my sufganya (jelly donut) and talking to people, but it was cute. anyway, after dinner, there was a hillel party in one of the dorms' public room. they had cookies and lots of alcohol and singing (things like "am yisrael chai" or "adon olam") and drinking and talking. i met a lot of people, and the amount of jewish spirit and enthusiasm really enlivened me! It was so incredible! this would _never_ have happened my freshman year or especially sophomore year. the new kids are so lucky to have this.
anyway, talked to some people danced a lot and drank some. headed back a bit before 12, and tried to sleep (cuz my suitemates werent doing anything interesting) and i woke up at 3 am with a minor hangover and couldnt fall back asleep until 8 am. Anyway, I went to serviecs at 12 that started at 10:30, and go there for the middle of the torah service, so i still had musaf amidah which is importnat, and i got to hear torah which was great. then we had lunch and hung out until 3 or so and by the time i left, shabbas was almost over. i spent nearly all of shabbat with jews, and it wasnt annoying. it was actually really really good.
anyway, now i'm going to take my friend out to dinner to congratulate his acceptance to catholic seminary. Mazel Tov, Vinny! You're gonna be a priest.
